What Should I Eat Before My Workout?

Do you often get light-headed during your workouts and just don't have the energy to keep up? Or maybe you are constantly dealing with digestion issues during your workouts. Both of these problems can be prevented by taking the time to plan your pre-exercise meal.

Here are some simple rules for filling your fuel tank:

  1. If your workout is between 30-60 minutes, you should be eating 200-300 calories of high carbohydrate, low-fat foods and 16 ounces of water 2-3 hours prior. An example is a slice of wheat toast with a tablespoon of jam and a banana.
  2. If you workout is between 1-2 hours long, you should be eating 300-400 calories of high carbohydrate, low-fat foods 3-4 hours prior. Try a cup of oatmeal with honey and berries with 16 ounces of fluid. Then, 1-2 hours before eat a light snack (low-fat yogurt) with another 16 ounces of fluid.
  3. Avoid foods high in fiber or foods that cause gas, such as brocoli and cauliflower.
  4. Avoid foods high in fat.

Follow these tips and you should have enough energy to kick your workouts into high gear without having to take any unwanted pit stops.

Two FIT Swimmers
Being part of the MIM triathlon team has definitely improved my physical and mental fitness and made me a better athlete and person. I owe Heather our trainer a great deal of gratitude for always challenging me, encouraging me to "train like an athlete" and for being such an inspiration. As she led by example, Heather encouraged and inspired me to always do my very best. Heather has an infectious quality that makes you always want to strive for excellence. "Average" is just not an option. Regardless of the activity, swimming, cycling, or running, "out of your comfort zone" became a theme of our training. I was pushed beyond my limits many days and quickly realized that with hardwork and dedication, change does happen and anything is possible. Just three months ago I could not swim 50 yards without stopping and since that time I have completed 2 triathlons. This training experience has changed my life!
